Newcastle defender Fabian Schar out with ruptured knee ligaments

Fabian Schar may have played his last game for Newcastle in the wake of tearing knee tendons during Newcastle's victory over Southampton.

The 29-year-old, whose contract lapse in mid year, will go through additional examination with a specialist in the coming days; however, his club have precluded him for "several months."

The Switzerland international says he is focusing on a return for the European Championships in June, giving occasion to feel qualms about the odds of him playing again in the

Premier League

this season.

"Difficult to accept. I felt really good on the pitch and the team did well the last few games." he said on Twitter.

"Now I will be out for a few months and it's gonna be a hard time. But I will try everything to be back on the pitch as soon as possible. And my goal will be to be ready for the Euros."

Schar went off the pitch in minute 75, having jostled his right knee endeavoring to strike a bounce back from his own free-kick. His exit constrained the hosts down to 10 men, having just utilized their three substitutes.

His partners Callum Wilson and Javier Manquillo were additionally taken off during the game, as the Magpies clutched to a 3-2 win.

The center-back could yet be offered another agreement to remain at St James' Park; however, a contract renewal for him seems far fetched.

Newcastle

's statement reads:

"The Switzerland international sustained a torn knee ligament in the 75th minute of the match and had to be stretchered from the pitch.

"He will undergo further assessment with a specialist consultant in the coming days before beginning his rehabilitation with the club's medical team.

"Everyone at Newcastle United wishes Fabian a full and speedy recovery."
