Abrashi joins FC Basel with a short-term loan deal

The player spent 6 years at Freiburg and he's finally back to his home country.

Amir Abrashi

has left

Freiburg

and joined

FC Basel

on a six-month loan deal. It was confirmed on Wednesday evening that the Swiss international will be leaving Germany after 6 years to play in his home country. Abrashi joined Freiburg from

Grasshoppers Zurich

on a free transfer six years ago and was very important in their progress through promotion in that season.

However, after gaining promotion to the Bundesliga, Abrashi’s performance declined year after year over the course of six seasons. A recent injury to the midfielder, Baptiste Santamaria gave him a chance to become a regular starter. Janik Haberer is expected to fill the position after the departure of Abrashi.

Schwarzwaldverein sporting director Klemens Hartenbach released a statement and paid tribute to the defensive midfielder.

"The current state of [positional] competition means that we cannot guarantee Amir any more playing time," Hartenbach noted, "Amir has been with us for five-and-a-half years and is an unequivocally deserving player. We wish to open that door for him."
