Erik Ten Hag rules out Ajax’s interest in Toby Alderweireld
The Belgian defender has been linked with a return to the Netherlands, with both Ajax and PSV said to be the potential destinations for Alderweireld.
The 31-year-old defender began his career in Amsterdam and has been linked with a return to the Eredivisie, with
PSV
and
Ajax
said to be interested in the Belgium international.
However,
Ten Hag
has said Ajax are not interested to sign
Toby Alderweireld
from Tottenham, although he admits Ajax do keep a close eye on the former player through the director of football Marc Overmars.
He told ESPN
: “We have good contact with Alderweireld, but we have no concrete interest. We are in constant contact. Marc maintains close contacts with all players who have left Ajax, just look at [Davy] Klaassen. At the moment that is not the case."
Alderweireld made 128 league appearances for
Ajax
in his 5-year spell at the club between 2008 and 2013 and won three consecutive league titles, then he moved to
Atletico Madrid
for a season before joining
Southampton
and
Tottenham
.
Alderweireld has been a key cog for
Jose Mourinho
’s Spurs side this season, however, the club is looking for a longer-term solution in defense now that the Belgian international is the older side of 30.
He has not won a major trophy at Tottenham yet. Although he says cups are not the measure of success, he would like to lift a trophy with the club.
Alderweireld said
: “We have to grab every chance we can to get silverware and to get as far as possible. We don’t have to be crazy about ‘silverware, silverware, silverware’, because the steps the club has taken are a lot bigger than winning one cup.
