Port Vale fire manager John Askey
Port Vale have removed manager John Askey and his assistant, Dave Kevan, after having only one victory in their last 12 Sky Bet League Two matches.
A 4-0 defeat at Mansfield on Saturday was the last straw for the ex-Macclesfield boss, who started managing Vale Park in February 2019.
Born in Stoke-on-Trent and being a youngster in the team, the 56-year-old called his appointment dismissal as “
coming home
” and put aside the danger of relegation in his first campaign.
Vale
stood 8th on points each game Last season when it was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic.
After three continuous league triumphs in October,
Vale
were firmly in the action again, but they were defeated in their next five games following an embarrassing FA Cup first-round exit to King’s Lynn.
The triumph over Bolton on December 5 gave
Askey
some time, but three losses of their last four games over the festive period has ended in his removal.
As the club statement read:
“Port Vale have today parted company with manager John Askey and assistant manager Dave Kevan.
“First-team coach Danny Pugh takes charge of the first team until further notice.
“The Port Vale board of directors would like to thank John and Dave for their service to the club and wish them all the best for the future.”
