Martial needs to score more goals, says Phil Neville

Former Red Devils star is surprised by the Frenchman’s low goal stats.

Manchester United

’s 2-1 victory against

Aston Villa

on Friday saw them join Liverpool at the top of the table with 33 points from 16 matches. Bruno Fernandes’ presence in the Red Devils’ midfield alongside a solid defensive performance have been key elements to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s success. However, Manchester United have been struggling with a lack of firepower in their final third with

Antony Martial

being able to score only five goals in the current season. Martial has scored only two

Premier League

goals this season and

Phil Neville

is surprised when he finds out about this stat.

“I was actually surprised by that stat [of Martial's goal record this season], I didn't know that stat before it was said in the interview.

“He's someone that needs to score more goals, needs to score 10 to 15 goals a season, I think he needs to be up to that mark for United to have a chance of winning the league.

“He can't just rely on a [Marcus] Rashford or a Fernandes to score the goals. He needs to be hitting those types of figures. I'd like to see him be more ruthless.”

Asked about Martial’s goal against Villa in the team’s Friday match, Neville responded:

“This was a really good finish, it was a good ball from Wan-Bissaka, but the guide of the header was really good and hopefully now he can get a run of games, a run of form, a run of rhythm. He looks fitter and I want to see him go on a run now of scoring goals.”
