Jurgen Klopp gives Joel Matip injury updates

The Cameroon international suffered a groin problem and limped out of the Reds' 1-1 draw against West Brom on Sunday.

Liverpool

manager

Jurgen Klopp

has confirmed defender

Joel Matip

will be sidelined for three weeks due to a groin injury.

With Liverpool already missing center-backs

Virgil van Dijk

and

Joe Gomez

due to long-term knee problems, Klopp can ill afford to be without Matip for a busy period of fixtures.

Nat Phillips

and

Fabinho

started in defense for the Reds in a goalless draw against

Newcastle

on Wednesday. Jurgen Klopp gave an update on Joel Matip's injury in his post-match press conference.

"The normal situation with this kind of injury is around about three weeks,"

Klopp said of the Cameroon defender

.

Liverpool had several chances to win the game against Newcastle United, but none found the net. It ended 0-0 but the game really should have been won. However, Klopp was happy with his side’s performance.

"Everybody knows if we win 1-0 then everybody is over the moon, and we should have won the game at least 1-0,"

Klopp added

. "We didn’t, and we have to accept that, but I can work with this performance, I can work with the things we saw tonight. We can build on that, we don’t have to change in the next three or four days as if everything is going wrong."

Liverpool next clash with Southampton on Monday in their first match in 2021.
