The summer transfer window has come to a close and teams have already acquired the players they need. Huge amounts of money have been spent on signing new players across Europe’s top five leagues and clubs competing in the Bundesliga are no exception. While the main competition in the German top-flight is between Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen has also set foot onto the big stage by having a player on the list of

most expensive Bundesliga signings of summer 2021

.

Surely you too are eager to know more about these new arrivals, who have cost their respective clubs some hefty amounts of money over the summer. So read on as we delve deeper into their careers and get to see if they have managed to live up to the billing so far.

Most expensive Bundesliga transfers of summer 2021

From the likes of Benjamin Henrichs to Dayot Upamecano and Donyell Malen, there are some incredible talents on the list of most expensive Bundesliga signings of summer 2021. So without further ado, here is everything you need to know about these quite expensive arrivals.

Mohamed Simakan

  • Transfer: R. Strasbourg – RB Leipzig

  • Transfer fee: €15M

There are some quite exciting talents in the Bundesliga right now and Mohamed Simakan is certainly one of them. Not many get to succeed in being a well-groomed and disciplined center-back, which is why Simakan has received special attention in recent months. The Frenchman’s career has been on the rise ever since he earned his promotion to

Strasbourg

’s senior squad in 2019. The Strasbourg youth academy graduate went on to become an integral part of his parent club throughout the years, despite suffering from multiple injuries and being sidelined for quite a long time.

He made a total of 44 appearances for Strasbourg and finally earned himself a move to RB Leipzig for €15 million, which put him on the list of

most expensive Bundesliga signings of summer 2021

. Leipzig might have just taken a big risk with Simakan as he has shown to be injury prone, which might prove difficult to cope with in the future. Of course the 21-year-old center-back has already proven himself to be quite a useful asset as he has become his new club’s main defender.

Simakan has already made more than 15 appearances for the German side and is hoping to continue his fine form of keeping the number of conceded goals to a bare minimum.

RB Leipzig

’s replacement for their recent departure Dayot Upamecano has performed well so far while also being quite a bargain. The German club actually acquired Simakan for at least €3 million less than what his market value is. Of course his €15 million price tag was still enough to make him one of the summer 2021 most expensive Bundesliga signings.

Benjamin Henrichs

  • Transfer: Monaco – RB Leipzig

  • Transfer fee: €15M

Benjamin Henrichs is one of the most exciting right-backs in the German top-flight despite a dip in form in recent seasons. Before joining RB Leipzig for €15 million and becoming one of the

most expensive Bundesliga signings of summer 2021

, Henrichs joined Monaco from

Bayer Leverkusen

for €20 million in the summer of 2018. He was considered to be the next big thing in football back in those days and even though he hasn’t managed to up his game since then, he is still considered to be a talented right-back with a bright future.

Henrichs managed to become

Monaco

’s main man at the right flank in his first season with the French side. However, a rather dismal second season led to the German defender joining RB Leipzig on loan in the 2020-21 season. The 24-year-old did not get many chances to prove himself to his peers and the critics as constant injuries sidelined him for a good chunk of the season.

However, Henrichs’ total of 20 appearances for the German side was apparently enough to convince the club’s manager to make his move permanent by splashing around €15 million, which put him on the list of 2021 Bundesliga summer transfer window most expensive signings.

The immensely versatile defender is more than capable of playing in a multitude of positions, but will have to keep himself in shape and avoid injury as much as possible. The Germany international’s current market value stands at around €9 million, which is utterly disappointing considering how much potential Henrichs actually has as one of the most talented right-backs in Europe. We will have to wait and see if he can live up to the billing of being on the list of summer 2021 most expensive Bundesliga signings.

Marcel Sabitzer

  • Transfer: RB Leipzig – Bayern Munich

  • Transfer fee: €15M

Bayern Munich

have been coming after RB Leipzig’s most vital parts in recent months and they have already signed the club’s main defender, main central midfielder and even their manager. The Bavarians are known for their hostile takeovers as they always sign anyone who dares to threaten their reign over the German top-flight. That is exactly why they signed the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund and why they sign most of their players.

Marcel Sabitzer is one of those signings as used to be a key part of Leipzig’s successful run in the Bundesliga last season. The Austrian midfielder joined Leipzig from Rapid Vienna for €2 million in 2014 and went on to spend a season on loan at RB Salzburg, before finally returning home to become his club’s main man in the middle of the park. Sabitzer went on to spend more than five years with the Red Bulls before finally joining Bayern Munich for €15 million, which led to him being included on the list of most expensive Bundesliga signings of summer 2021.

What excites Bayern fans the most and leaves everyone else in awe of the club’s negotiation tactics, is the fact that the Bavarians actually managed to acquire Sabitzer for almost one-third of his market value. Having signed off on one of the

most expensive Bundesliga transfers of summer 2021

, Sabitzer has made a total of 12 appearances for his new club and is yet to find his feet and settle in at the Allianz Arena.

The Austria international is eyeing his first major silverware in Germany, but will have to work extra to earn a spot amongst the regular starters, despite the fact that he used to be an integral part of Julian Nagelsmann’s plans back at Salzburg.

Ilaix Moriba

  • Transfer: Barcelona B – RB Leipzig

  • Transfer fee: €16M

18-year-old midfielder Ilaix Moriba is one of the few players in the history of football to make their first big-money move while not even being a part of their club’s senior squad. Moriba was a part of Barcelona’s reserves side and was yet to make his debut for the club’s senior side. The dream was left unreached Guinea-born midfielder joined RB Leipzig for a whopping €16 million and earned a spot on the list of

summer 2021 most expensive Bundesliga signings

.

While €16 million is not much of a whopping fee nowadays in the highly inflated transfer market, it is still a considerable fee for an untested youngsters with no professional football experience. The U19 Spain international has made three debuts in various competitions for RB Leizpig, being subbed on at the dying moments of the game every time.

Perhaps being amongst the most expensive Bundesliga signings of summer 2021 is too heavy of a burden for such a young and inexperienced footballer. We will have to wait and see how things pan out for Moriba in the future as he slowly earns more game time.

Angelino

  • Transfer: Manchester City – RB Leipzig

  • Transfer fee: €18M

Manchester City

have been so star-studded in recent years that Pep Guardiola rarely felt the need to deploy Angelino. The 24-year-old left-back has been on the rise ever since joining the Premier League side’s youth academy in 2013. Even though he didn’t get much of a chance with the Citizens, Angelino did get to perform well during his loan spells at clubs such as NAC Breda and

PSV Eindhoven

.

The Spaniard also got to spend a season on loan at RB Leipzig before the club finally decided to make his move permanent by splashing €18 million to acquire his signature in July. Angelino was a vital part of Leipzig’s plans last season as he got to make more than 40 appearances for the Bundesliga side and helped them compete for a spot in the top-3. The former Manchester City man has managed to appear in more than 10 games this season and is his side’s main left-back.

Being on the list of

2021 Bundesliga summer transfer window most expensive signings

puts extra pressure on almost any footballer. For the time being, however, Angelino has managed to hold on to his spot in the starting-XI. We will have to see if he can continue performing well after making his move permanent. The Spaniard got to win three English League Cups and the Community Shield with Manchester City and will be eyeing to finally end Bayern Munich’s reign over the Bundesliga title.

Josko Gvardiol

  • Transfer: Dinamo Zagreb – RB Leipzig

  • Transfer fee: €18M

RB Leipzig have been on quite a shopping spree lately and have spent dozens of millions of Euros and bringing in new and exciting talents. Josko Gvardiol is a fine example of a young talent as he has managed to make it into the list of 2021 Bundesliga summer transfer window most expensive signings after spending only a couple of seasons at Dinamo Zagreb.

The 19-year-old center-back was phenomenal during his time at

Dinamo Zagreb

, for whom he made more than 50 appearances and even got to bag himself 4 goals and 3 assists in the process. The Croatian is versatile enough to be deployed as a left-back as well as a center-back, which gives him and his managers the wider choices when it comes to tactics and play style. Gvardiol became one of the most expensive Bundesliga signings of summer 2021 after joining RB Leipzig for a little over €18 million.

He has since managed to reach the 15-appearances milestone, during which the center-back has managed to keep several clean sheets while also providing 2 assists in the process. Having won the Croatian league on to occasions and the Croatian Cup, the young center-back will surely be eyeing more major silverware at his new club as he aims to live up to the billing of being one of the most expensive Bundesliga signings of summer 2021.

Odilon Kossounou

  • Transfer: Club Brugge – Bayer Leverkusen

  • Transfer fee: €23M

We finally get to meet someone who is not signed by either RB Leipzig or Bayern Munich. There is finally someone on the list of most expensive Bundesliga signings of summer 2021 that has cost an entirely different club a considerable amount of money and that club is Bayer Leverkusen, who paid a whopping €23 million to acquire Odilon Kossounou from

Club Brugge

. The German league is filled with young and strong center-backs and Kossounou is certainly a fine example.

The Ivory Coast international is a giant of a footballer with his 1.91 meter height. The 20-year-old made more than 50 appearances for his former club and gained enough experience to play in a bigger league before making his big-money move to Bayer Leverkusen. The Werkselfs’ new manager Gerard Seoane is confident that Kossounou will be a great addition to his team and the defender has proved that he is more than capable of delivering great performances under intense pressure.

While the young defender is certainly not hoping to become Bundesliga champions with Leverkusen, he is still eyeing silverware with his new side as they are capable of competing for domestic titles. The Ivorian center-back is already a two-time Belgian champions and even has the Belgian Super Cup in his trophy cabinet. Perhaps one of his concerns for the time being is to stop his market value from dropping drastically after skyrocketing thanks to how much his current club paid to acquire his services from his former side.

Andre Silva

  • Transfer: E. Frankfurt – RB Leipzig

  • Transfer fee: €23M

If you thought that the list of most expensive Bundesliga signings of summer 2021 would no longer consist of RB Leipzig signings, you might have to think again as the German club put another one on this prestigious list by signing Andre Silva from

Eintracht Frankfurt

for €23 million. The Portuguese center-forward has been one of the best strikers of his generation for years and has graced the pitch at clubs such as FC Porto, Sevilla, AC Milan, Eintracht Frankfurt and now of course RB Leipzig.

The German side have acquired their new goal scorer at quite a bargain as they have paid almost half the amount that the Portugal international is worth in the market. Having signed for Eintracht Frankfurt from

AC Milan

for €3 million, Silva got to showcase his phenomenal mentality and work rate by scoring 45 goals and providing 15 assists in the process of 71 appearances, which attracted a lot of attention from several top clubs in Europe. It was Leipzig, however, who got their hands on the lethal striker in the end.

Considering his incredible form last season, Andre Silva might not have had a fine start in the new campaign as he has only managed to score 3 goals while providing 5 assists in more than 15 games. Of course the 26-year-old is only getting used to his new surroundings and can prove to be more lethal in the coming weeks.

Silva’s current market value is estimated to be around €40 million, which shows how much class and potential he actually has. We will have to wait and see if he can finally turn the tides in his favor or if he is going to be a mediocre signing for the rest of the season.

Donyell Malen

  • Transfer: PSV Eindhoven – Borussia Dortmund

  • Transfer fee: €30M

Many except RB Leipzig fans would be happy to know that there is once again another player on the list of Bundesliga 2021 most expensive signings, who was not signed by either Bayern Munich or RB Leipzig. Borussia Dortmund got to make another top-money signing by splashing €30 million on Donyell Malen, who joined the Bundesliga side from PSV Eindhoven. The 22-year-old is one of the most exciting strikers of his generation and already has the experience of playing for top clubs in Europe.

He got to impress everyone with his goal-scoring skills during his days at PSV, for whom the young center-forward made more than 110 appearances and managed to bag himself 55 goals and 24 assists. While Malen has not reached the level of Erling Braut Haaland just yet, his stats are considerable enough not to take his lethality lightly. The Netherlands international won the Eredivisie with PSV back in the 2017-18 season and will be hopeful of competing with Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga title and other domestic honors.

For the time being, however, Malen has not been hitting the mark as often as he used to, which has raised some doubts over his future at the club. Two goals and two assists in more than 15 appearances is not certainly not something to boast about.

The Dutchman is still finding his feet at his new club as Marco Rose is trying to replace Jadon Sancho with Malen, who is naturally a center-forward rather than a left winger. Competing with Haaland will be difficult for Malen, which is why he either has to outperform his fellow man or adapt to a whole different position by showing some versatility.

Dayot Upamecano

  • Transfer: RB Leipzig – Bayern Munich

  • Transfer fee: €42.5M

RB Leipzig might have spent dozens of millions of Euros on signing new players this season, but they might not get to replace their main center-back at all, even with Josko Gvardiol’s impressive performance. Their former main defender was none other than Dayot Upamecano, who initially joined the Red Bulls from their sister club RB Salzburg for €18M in 2017 and began his rise to the very top from very early on.

The French defender went on to make a total of 154 appearances for Leipzig as he helped his side compete for the league title as they gave the Bavarians the scare of the decade. The now 23-year-old center-back is already considered to be one of the best defenders in the world and FC Bayern were quick to sign him prior to the summer transfer window.

Upamecano has become the main man at the back for Julian Nagelsmann, which could be both due to his performance and Bayern Munich’s lack of squad depth in the defense department. The France international has made more than 15 appearances for Bayern Munich and has even recorded himself a total of 4 assists in the process.

While he is certainly deployed for his defensive abilities and tactical awareness at the back, it is definitely more than welcome when a defender scores or provides an important assist during a game. It seems that Dayo Upamecano will be a name to remember for years to come if the young center-back continues performing at this level in the coming seasons.
