Euro 2020: England vs Scotland match preview- team news, lineups

England will be facing Scotland today, hoping to get a sweet victory and 3 points out of this game but on the opposite side, Scotland would try to cover up their previous loss by today’s performance.

When England hosts Scotland at Wembley tonight for a thrilling encounter, they will be seeking to make it two victories from two matches at this summer's European Championship.

The Three Lions

beat Croatia 1-0 in their

Euro 2020

opener on Sunday, but Scotland lost 2-0 to the Czech Republic, leaving Steve Clarke's team with a lot of gaps to make up in Group D.

England vs. Scotland match preview

Before we get into the article, let us take a look at the group that these two teams are in.

  • Group D:

    England, Croatia, Scotland, Czech Republic

We can say that England has the highest chance of qualifying from this stage considering that the team has already won its game against Croatia, the previous World cup finalist.

Form analysis

How did these two teams get here in the first place? How did they perform in their previous matches? Let's take a look at their form analysis.

England

On Sunday, Raheem Sterling scored the game's only goal against Croatia, giving England a crucial win at Wembley to start their Group D campaign. In actuality, the Three Lions had a rather easy match against a Croatian side that lacked creativity in the final third.

Apart from the defeat, there were plenty of positives, with Kalvin Phillips impressing in the middle of the park and Sterling scoring despite his poor performance for Manchester City last season.

England has already won seven consecutive matches in all competitions, conceding just once in that time, and the fact that Ben Chilwell and Jadon Sancho did not even make the bench against Croatia demonstrates the strength of the current squad.

Scotland

The Scottish

had their chances in Glasgow, but they fell to Patrik Schick late in the first half, before the Bayer Leverkusen forward produced a fantastic long-range goal to make it 2-0 early in the second half, and Clarke's squad could not reply.

Scotland is competing in their first European Championship since 1996 when they notably faced England in the group stage and their first major event since the 1998 World Cup. They end their Group D campaign against Croatia on June 22.

Clarke's team has always been underdogs in this group when it comes to achieving a top-two finish, but a win in today’s match would put them in the discussion for second or third place ahead of their last game against Croatia.

The Scots will undoubtedly be fired up to face their rivals today, but it remains to be seen whether they have enough quality across the park to upset an England side that may be wary of topping the group, given the possibility that Portugal, France, or Germany await them in the round of 16.

England vs. Scotland – head-to-head in all competition

England and Scotland have met each other in the green pitch a total of 114 times. The results have been fairly equal, with 48 games for England and 41 games for the Scots. With their first match ending in a draw on November 30th, 1872, the total of matches that ended to neither of their favors is 25.

Line-ups and formation

In the next part, we would take a look at the probable lineups of both teams and their formations.

England

Due to a hip ailment, Dean Henderson has had to withdraw from the England team, and Aaron Ramsdale has taken his place, but there are no fresh concerns from the win over Croatia, at least not from the starting XI.

Harry Maguire has declared himself fit after making significant progress in his recovery from an ankle injury, but it is unlikely that the

Manchester United

captain will be risked against Scotland, while Jordan Henderson is still recovering from a groin problem and is unlikely to be included in the starting XI.

Due to an unclear injury, Jack Grealish missed training on Tuesday; the Aston Villa captain is likely to be in the squad against Scotland but might end up on the bench, with Sterling and Phil Foden joining Harry Kane in the attack.

Southgate will almost definitely choose the same lineup that faced Croatia, but there could be a change at left-back, with Luke Shaw replacing Kieran Trippier.

England possible starting lineup:

England probable lineup:

Pickford

; Walker, Stones, Mings, Shaw; Phillips, Rice, Mount; Sterling, Kane, Foden

Scotland

In terms of Scotland, Kieran Tierney was a major miss against the Czech Republic due to a calf ailment, but he could return for this match.

Clarke is anticipated to make a handful of changes from the starting lineup on Monday, and it wouldn't be surprising to see Southampton's Che Adams start in the final third.

Stephen O'Donnell struggled to make an impression in Scotland's group opener, but he could keep his spot, while Stuart Armstrong, Scott McTominay, and John McGinn should all return to the midfield.

Scotland probable lineup:

Marshall; Hendry, Hanley, Tierney; O'Donnell,

McTominay

, Armstrong, McGinn, Robertson; Dykes, Adams

Prediction

It is hard to predict based on their previous head-to-head games but if we look back at their performance in the

Euro 2020 preparation

matches or even England’s win streak, we would root a bit more for England than the Scots. We guess that Englishman would win with a margin of one goal while the Scots would be unable to score any goals.
