Sir Geoff Hurst Calls for National Holiday if England Wins Euro 2024

Backing Budweiser Campaign, Hurst and PM Starmer Advocate Celebration for Potential Victory

England

legend and 1966 World Cup winner Sir Geoff Hurst is urging the UK government to declare a celebratory holiday if the Three Lions triumph in the Euro 2024 final against Spain on July 14. Hurst’s call aligns with Budweiser's #BudBankHoliday campaign, which seeks to honor Gareth Southgate’s squad should they secure the historic win.

In a statement supporting the campaign, Hurst expressed his belief in the current team’s potential. “From the very beginning, I have believed in this talented team going all the way and feel privileged to have passed on the winning spirit of the 1966 team by blessing the ‘Home’ cans,” he said. Hurst emphasized the significance of a national holiday, adding, “Thanks to the dedication of the team and unwavering support from England’s fans, we’re very close to victory. It’s about time we have something to celebrate as a nation, and a bank holiday would make a win even more special for millions of supporters across the country.”

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer echoed Hurst’s sentiments, acknowledging the need to commemorate the Three Lions' achievements if they emerge victorious. While cautious about jinxing the outcome, Starmer stated, “We should certainly mark the occasion...we must mark it in some way. But the most important thing is getting it over the line on Sunday.”

As England prepares for its second consecutive European Championship final, hopes are high that Southgate's men can end a 58-year trophy drought. The much-anticipated match against Spain will take place on Sunday, July 14, with the entire nation eagerly watching and hoping for a historic victory.
