Barcelona fighting to reduce the buy option on Man City's Joao Cancelo

The future of Manchester City’s Portuguese defender Joao Cancelo has been up in the air for some time.

Since falling out with City boss Pep Guardiola, Cancelo’s next step has been shrouded in uncertainty, while

have been offering up odds on the player’s next destination. In recent weeks those odds have shortened on the Portugal international joining Catalan giants Barcelona. But things remain unresolved.

It seems that, with financial restrictions still in place at the Camp Nou, a permanent transfer is unlikely for now. But fresh reports reveal that, while Barca and City haggle over any future transfer fee, the Spanish club have now agreed to cover 90% of

Cancelo’s substantial wages

in a loan deal for the rest of the season. The size of the fee at the end of the campaign is reportedly around the €45 million mark, although Barca will hope to reduce that further. The Catalans are only recently in a position to buy Cancelo after successfully moving on Ousmane Dembele to Paris Saint-Germain for a fee in a similar region.
