Those looking to study form should consider results from similar races. The Cheltenham Gold Cup, which is run just a few weeks ahead of the Grand National, is another testing jump event, and a number of horses will be entered for both this and the Grand National.

Galopin Des Champs will not be looking to complete the double at Aintree. Of those that are aiming to compete in both races, there were mixed results at Cheltenham on March 17.

Conflated is one of the outsiders for Aintree, but this horse showed well at the Gold Cup, finishing in third place for trainer Gordon Elliott. Royal Pagaille, who is quoted at even longer odds for the National, came home in sixth. It should be noted that only seven horses of the original 13 runners completed the 2023 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

In terms of success at the Grand National, results suggest that Noble Yeats is the obvious horse to follow. He won as an outsider in 2022 and is gearing up for a shot at a rare double.

Trends to Consider

Trends among previous winners can also help when looking at horses for 2023 and beyond. The stats show that the majority of successful Grand National runners have been aged eight and above, so experience is essential.

Prior to the 2023 renewal, 12 of the 14 previous winners were taking part in the Grand National for the first time. That would tend to suggest that the

faces a tough task to convert as one of the favorites.
