Toney pleads guilty to betting charges as he sets for a lengthy ban

After failing to make Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad, Toney was accused of 232 betting breaches by the Football Association. Now, the 26-year-old is set to face a lengthy ban after pleading guilty to many of those charges.

Toney is being investigated for bets made before he joined Brentford and he has not been accused of gambling on his own team to lose but the FA prohibits players from betting on the sport.

According to the

Daily Mail

, the Brentford striker has pleaded guilty to many of those 262 charges. Joey Barton was previously banned for 18 months after admitting to placing 1260 bets on football, meaning Toney can be suspended for several months.

Toney joined Brentford in 2020 and since then has scored 55 goals in 103 matches. He has scored 14 goals in the Premier League this season. He initially made his name in the EFL as a 16 years old teenager at Northampton Town before being snapped up by Newcastle United. The Magpies’ chief scout Graham Carr drew on his contacts at the club to grab one of League Two’s burgeoning talents.
