Klopp defends Van Dijk being selected in The FIFA FIFPro World XI

Despite Liverpool's horrendous season, Virgil van Dijk was selected in the 2022 FIFA FIFPRO Men's World XI on Monday. The selection drew a lot of criticism from the football world while the Liverpool boss defends FIFA's selection.

Helping Liverpool win an FA Cup and League Cup double, Jurgen Klopp was pleased to see Virgil van Dijk being selected as a part of The FIFA FIFPro World XI. Klopp told reporters:

"It wasn't based on the last four or five performances, but on the last year and it's fully deserved. He asked if he could go and I said of course. He was back last night. It's great."

Argentina dominated the Best awards with three individual wins as Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez won the Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper award and Albiceleste boss Lionel Scaloni won the Best FIFA Men’s Coach award. Finally, Lionel Messi won the coveted Best FIFA Men’s Player award.

This is the second time that the former Barcelona striker has won the award, with the last time being in 2019. Messi has won seven Ballon d’Or trophies as well as winning the Golden Ball in the 2022 World Cup when he was crowned champion of the World Cup with Argentina. Messi competed with teammate Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid captain Karim Benzema for the Best Player award.
