Eric Cantona makes ‘ghost of the past’ admission about United’s No.7 jersey

United legend Eric Cantona claims that he was inspired by the legendary players who wore United’s No.7 shirt before him when he signed for them

Eric Cantona recalls his move from

Leeds United

to Manchester United in 1992 and how the history of the club and the No.7 shirt inspired him.

"I felt the step up. I felt the ghosts of the past at Man Utd. Sometimes the ghosts of the past for some players it can paralyze, for me it was helpful,"

he told BT Sport’s What I Wore.

"I felt the energy of the ghosts of the past makes me even stronger."

He went on to talk about his love for the No.7 shirt.

"I started to play with the No, 7 because Bryan Robson was old, too old,"

Cantona said jokingly

." I started playing with this number. I loved this number. The number I have on the back was important to how I feel. If I don’t feel good, I don’t feel good. I cannot play well. When I wore this shirt for the first time, I felt like I had worn it forever."

Cantona went on to win 4 Premier League titles and Two FA Cups in his five years at the club, ushering a new era of

United

dominance in English football that would last well into the 2010s.
