Manchester United closing in on Wout Weghorst after reaching agreement with Burnley

Manchester United has reached a verbal agreement to sign the Dutch striker Wout Weghorst on loan in the January transfer window.

Sky Sports reports that

Manchester United

has reached an agreement with Burnley to sign

Wout Weghorst

for around €3m.

Weghorst is currently on loan at

Besiktas

and Manchester United is waiting for Burnley to reach an agreement with Besiktas to cut Weghorst's loan short.

Weghorst’s contract with Besiktas must be terminated before he can sign a contract with Manchester United. Sky Sports claim that United has other options if this transfer fails

to materialize.

Fabrizio Romano also claims that Manchester United has reached a verbal agreement to sign Weghorst but Besiktas will give final approval only if they find a replacement for him.

In a statement, Besiktas said:

"The claim that there is an exit clause in our player's contract, stating that his contract can be terminated with a compensation of 2.5m euros (£2.2m) in case of an offer from the Premier League, is fictitious.

"The news that the player in question will leave the team on Tuesday is completely untrue. The initiative regarding Wout Weghorst belongs entirely to Besiktas.”

The 30-year-old striker scored only two goals in 20 matches for Burnley but since joining Besiktas on loan last summer, he has scored nine goals in 18 games for the Turkish side. He also scored twice as a substitute for the Netherlands in the World Cup quarter-final against Argentina.

Eric Ten Hag’s side must register Weghorst by 12 pm on Friday for him to be available for the Manchester derby on Saturday.
