Galtier backs “natural born leader” Mbappe to become France’s captain

Capped 66 times for France as well as helping them lift the 2018 World Cup, Mbappe is in line to replace Hugo Lloris as Les Blues captain after the goalkeeper's retirement from international football. Despite his age, Galtier believes the forward would welcome the responsibility.

After more than 14 years representing

Les Bleus

, France captain Hugo Lloris decided to retire from international duty at the age of 36. With Didier Deschamps yet to select a successor for Lloris, the 24-year-old PSG forward emerged as an obvious candidate with Raphael Varane as another strong contender for the role.

Scoring 36 goals through 66 caps,

Kylian Mbappe

helped France reach consecutive World Cup finals in 2018 and 2022.

Asked about the situation,

Christophe Galtier

told his press conference:

"I'm not the national team coach. I'm not going to get involved in the France captain discussion. Sometimes, the France captain is of a certain age with a certain number of caps.

"Kylian Mbappe has got many under his belt and many incredible performances. I haven't spoken to Kylian Mbappe about whether he will be the France captain or not.

"Of course, that is a huge responsibility. It is not me who will decide who the captain will be. Even without the armband, he is a leader."
