Jorge Mendes in negotiations with Portugal over Mourinho's appointment

Jose Mourinho's agent Jorge Mendes is in talks with the Portuguese Federation over replacing Fernando Santos.

The Portuguese football Federation announced on Thursday that Fernando Santos has left his role as head coach of Portugal.

Portugal

was eliminated from the World Cup in the quarter-finals stage against Morocco. Santos who guided Portugal to the Euro 2016 is the most successful manager in Portugal’s history.

Reports suggest that the federation is interested in hiring

and now Corriere Dello Sport claims that Jorge Mendes held a meeting with the President of the Portuguese Federation Fernando Gomes on Thursday.

Reports in Portugal suggest that if the federation fails to find an agreement with Jose Mourinho to replace Fernando Santos, current U21 head coach Rui Jorge could be promoted to the job full-time.

Mourinho previously expressed a desire to move into international football but reportedly staying at

Roma

remains Mourinho’s priority and he only considers their offer if he could manages both Roma and Portugal simultaneously.

Mourinho and Roma's squad arrived in Portugal yesterday to prepare for the second part of the season. They will face Cadiz in a friendly match at the Estadio Municipal of Albufeira.

The 59-year-old Mourinho has a contract with Roma until 2024 and won the Europa Conference League title last season. Mourinho has led Porto and Inter to Champions League glory. He also has won many more trophies during spells at Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Manchester United.
