Morocco 0–0 Spain: Morocco wins 3-0 in the penalty shoot-out

Morocco and Spain faced each other in their Qatar 2022 round-of-16 tie as Morocco qualified as the winners of their group while a defeat to Japan made Spain proceed as the runners-up.

After their 2-2 draw in the 2018 World Cup group stage, it was the second meeting between Morocco and Spain. Being eliminated in the same stage in the previous edition,

Spain

was eager to proceed to the next level with a victory over their African opponents as the Spaniards only lost once to an African opponent in a World Cup stage, in 1998 to Nigeria in a match that their current manager, Luis Enrique started as a player.

As expected, La Roja dominated the possession in the first half. However,

Morocco

's solid defense limited their efforts to only one shot while Morocco looked way more dangerous on the attack as Hakimi and Mazraoui had chances to score the opener for the African side. Failing to do so, the two sides settled on a draw for the first half.

Luis Enrique sent his men with a different approach in the second half as they had some early chances. However, unable to use them, the game went back to the same routine of the first half with Spain enjoying the possession and Morocco threatening in Spain's third half. With none of the sides able to resolute a difference, the game went to the extra times on a goalless draw.

After 30 minutes of extra time, the two sides proceeded to the penalty shoot-out to determine the match. With

Bono

saving all of Spain's penalties, Morocco proceeded to the quarter-finals of the tournaments with a 3-0 victory in the penalties.
