Benzema's mysterious injury might cost him France’s World Cup opener
Despite an injury that has been dogging him in the past month, Karim Benzema was among the players in France’s 25-man squad as expected. However, Benzema continued individual training with France as he might miss his side's Qatar 2022 opener against Australia.
who helped the Los Blancos win the double Champions League and La Liga last season by scoring 44 goals, deservedly won his first Ballon d’Or this season and will be one of the key players in the World Cup for France.
Picking up the injury in
Real Madrid's Champions League victory against Celtic, the Frenchman has missed almost a month of club-level action as Didier Deschamps will hugely rely on the Ballon d’Or winner for defending the World Cup title in Qatar.
However, according to
Mundo Deportivo, Benzema is far from being fit to play as he has yet to participate in group training with his national side in Doha. Having last appeared against Elche in October, there were suggestions that the 34-year-old is rested to be fit for the World Cup. However, the Italian coach denies suggestions that the Ballon d’Or winner is resting ahead of his perhaps last
World Cup.
Deschamps
clarified the extent of Benzema’s injury earlier:
"Benzema has had a few minor injuries, but he knows that the World Cup is a very important moment. He will do everything, like the whole group, to be 100 percent."
