Southampton sack Ralph Hasenhuttl as manager

Southampton has announced they have decided to sack Ralph Hasenhuttl after just under four years in charge at the club.

Ralph Hasenhuttl has been sacked as

Southampton

’s manager following a 4-1 home defeat against

Newcastle

on Sunday. They are in the

Premier League

relegation zone with just one win in their last nine matches. The Saints are in 18th place and have lost six of their last nine league matches.

A club statement read:

"Hasenhuttl departs having made a significant contribution to the club, overseeing some memorable results and also playing a key role in the development of our club infrastructure, identity and playing squad.

"However, we now believe it is an appropriate time to make a change. Everyone involved with the club would like to express their sincere thanks to Ralph for all of his efforts, as well as the unwavering commitment he has shown throughout his time as manager."

The 55-year-old was appointed in December 2013 and was the Premier League's fourth-longest serving manager. Southampton suffered two 9-0 defeats against Leicester City and Manchester United under Hasenhuttl but the Austrian managed to keep them in the Premier League.

Southampton finished 16th, 11th, and twice 15th under Hasenhuttl in the Premier League. They also reached the 2021 FA Cup semi-finals.

First-team coach Ruben Selles will take charge for the Carabao Cup game against Sheffield on Wednesday. In their last match before the World Cup Southampton will play Liverpool on Sunday at Anfield.
