Lampard's focused on Calvert-Lewin reaching the World Cup

Frank Lampard has claimed that his focus is on the recovery of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and his brilliance at Everton in order to make England's World Cup squad.

Calvert-Lewin had a great performance 2020-21, scoring 21 goals for the Toffees. This brilliance made him reach the England squad for the first time and he scored 4 goals in 4 matches for the Three Lions. He was present at Euro 2020 and although he missed most of last season due to injury, he returned to Everton's line-up against Crystal Palace and managed to score in a 3-2 win for his team. He suffered a new injury and in the last two matches of Everton, he came on as a substitute in the second half, and in both matches, his team lost against Manchester United and Tottenham. His chances to participate in the World Cup have decreased, but Lampard is highly motivated to bring him to Qatar.

Lampard said: 

"We've got to be careful with Dominic coming back, making sure we gradually bring him in but as quickly as possible," he told reporters ahead of Everton's trip to Newcastle United. 

"We're definitely getting to the stage now where we can hopefully get more minutes out of him.

"It's human nature and a natural mentality of top-level players, they want to play for their countries. The first thing is you play well for your club to get there.

"Because of Dominic's injuries it's put him in this position. My feeling is if he'd been fit and playing regularly he'd be making that case.

"It's step by step for us, Dominic is an England player, he's been in that squad – can we get him fit for us first, see what he can deliver for us, then of course he gets himself into that question."
