Football is hurting itself - Sarri complained packed match schedule

The intensity of football competitions has caused the number of injuries to increase in recent weeks.

Maurizio Sarri believes that the compression of the football schedule has become the enemy of the sport.

The holding of the Qatar World Cup in winter and the tight schedule of the European leagues have made the clubs have to hold a large number of games in a short period of time. Italian clubs participating in European competitions have held a meeting every three or four days during the last month, and the number of player injuries has risen sharply. Now Sarri claimed that modern football is hurting itself.

“Football must be saved from itself and its institutions. We are going down a road where it is impossible to show beauty. Having to play 60 to 70 matches a year leads players to train less and produce a less spectacular game.

“We are at a time when sport has become business, where appearance counts more. It’s ridiculous.”

Asked if the money he earns in football is immoral, Sarri replied:

“It’s as immoral as the world today. If an actor gets €30m for a film it is immoral, but then the earnings justify it. I think it’s unfair, but it’s part of today’s world.”
