Koeman reveals Laporta blocked Wijnaldum signing

The ex-Blaugrana manager has said that Joan Laporta did not let a contract take place for Georginio Wijnaldum during the time Koeman was at the helm.

Ronald Koeman

was eager to pen a contract with

Georginio Wijnaldum

when he departed

Liverpool

in 2021 to strengthen his midfield options. However, he could not acquire his services and the Dutch international made a move to

Paris Saint-Germain

instead. The former Barcelona boss, who was dismissed by the club on October 2021, has now revealed that Juan Laporta was the reason behind the deal not taking place.

"I tried to sign Wijnaldum for Barça but I failed because the President wanted to annoy me more than bringing in a player. That delayed the operation and for that reason, he opted for PSG. Otherwise, he would have played for Barcelona,"

Koeman stated to AD.

During his first season with the Ligue 1 giants, Wijnaldum was struggling and could not live up to the expectations. Therefore, the club loaned him to Roma this summer. However, he sustained a leg injury that has kept him out of action for Jose Mourinho’s side and he is now in doubt for his country’s World Cup in Qatar later this year.

Barcelona will continue their La Liga season after the international break on October 2, when they lock horns with Mallorca.
