Martial hits out at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Jose Mourinho

Anthony Martial believes he was dealt an unfair hand by former Manchester United managers Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Anthony Martial

has been harsh toward Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, two former

Manchester United

managers. He says that both of them mistreated him while they were in charge at Old Trafford.

When he moved from Monaco to Manchester United in September 2015 for up to £58 million (€69 million), French forward Martial became the most expensive teenager in history.

He was signed by Louis van Gaal and played under him for less than a year. He said they had "a great relationship." Mourinho took over for Van Gaal in May 2016, and

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

was one of the first players the new manager brought in.

Martial says his problems with Mourinho "started with the story of the jersey number." He says he didn't want to give Swedish star Ibrahimovic the number nine. "During the holidays, he [Mourinho] sends me a message asking if I want to change to the 11, telling me that it is great because it is that of the legend Ryan Giggs," Martial told France Football magazine.

"I tell him I respect Giggs very much, but I would rather keep the nine. And when I get back to the club, I see that my jersey has the number 11. It wasn't a good start. He didn't care about me."

Martial said that

Jose Mourinho

, now Roma's manager, started to talk about him in the media with "little phrases" like he did with Karim Benzema at Real Madrid. "He likes these little games, but he knows who he is doing them with. He knows I was 20 at the time and that if I say something, I'll be seen as the disrespectful young person," Martial said. "So I didn't say anything; it didn't matter."

Alexis Sanchez, who came from

Arsenal

in the middle of the 2017-18 season, took Martial's spot. This made Martial unhappy. "It's World Cup time, and it cost me a lot of money in the end, especially since France won. Martial said, "I should have been there." United fired Mourinho in December 2018, and Solskjaer, already a fan favorite at the club, took over as a surprise.

Martial, from France, finished the 2019-20 season as United's top scorer with 23 goals, but he lost popularity after that. He said that Solskjaer didn't know what to do with him after that successful campaign. Soon after Solskjaer was fired in November 2021, Martial was sent on loan to Sevilla, where he made 12 appearances and started nine. He scored once in that time.

Martial said that he "regularly played hurt" while Solskjaer was manager. He said that the manager didn't clarify to outsiders that he was hurt when the team struggled.

"The coach never bothered to tell the media," Martial, who is still a player for United, said. "I got hurt for good, and I couldn't play anymore when I got better. It hurt me a lot, and I felt like I had been wronged. You are told to give up yourself for the team, and then you are kicked out. I think it's almost a crime."
