Premier League seeks VAR explanation after scandalous disallowed goals

VAR intervention ruled out suspicious West Ham's goal against Chelsea and a Newcastle goal against Crystal Palace this weekend. The VAR decision drew lots of controversies with David Moyes and Eddie Howe seeking an explanation for the costly decisions.

Both of the

Premier League

referees, Andy Madley and Michael Salisbury, were told by the VAR official to review their decisions to award the goals, leading to both being disallowed.

Now confirmed by the

English Football Association

, Premier League will ask Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) to explain its rationale for directing the on-field referee to overturn those goals.

Chelsea

defeated the Hammers 2-1 at home this weekend, with VAR ruling out

Maxwel Cornet

's 90th-minute equalizer for

West Ham

. The Hammers’ boss

David Moyes

found VAR intervention "scandalous" and "absolutely rotten" as West Ham's Jarrod Bowen was ruled to have impeded Chelsea goalkeeper

Edouard Mendy

.

Meanwhile,

Newcastle United

was held 0-0 by

Crystal Palace

at St James' Park, with

Eddie Howe

claiming an own goal from Tyrick Mitchell should have been allowed to stand. Newcastle's Joe Willock was adjudged to have fouled Palace keeper

Vicente Guaita

after the VAR intervention even though the Newcastle player appeared to have been pushed by Mitchell. Eddie Howe said he considered it a "perfectly good goal" as the club's legend

Alan Shearer

told the BBC the VAR decision was "shocking, abysmal, disgraceful".

It's been reported that the issue is being treated as a priority matter by the Premier League with the VAR system continuing controversies since its arrival in Premier League in the 2019-20 season.
