Arteta insists Arsenal won't repeat the last year’s opener mistake

The gunners kicked off last season at Brentford, where they were beaten 2-0 in the Bees' first top-flight game in 74 years. Ahead of their Opener against Crystal Palace, Arteta reveals why Arsenal won't wilt on Premier League opening day again.

Mikel Arteta

said in his press conference ahead of Friday's trip to

Palace

:

"[This match] is different.

"Everything that happened before Brentford was pretty strange and unique. We are really excited, looking forward to the new season and will try to start in the best way."

During Gunners' horrendous run of spring form last season, Palace beat Arsenal 3-0 with their new captain

Martin Odegaard

conceding a penalty that evening.

Arteta hailed

Gunners

’ new skipper adding:

"This season we had the opportunity to do it in the way that I believe could work.

"We chose a player in Martin who has been with us for 18 months and represents the values of the club in the perfect way.

"He’s respected by all the dressing room and admired by the staff. I’m happy to have someone like him, he’s enjoying the responsibility and he’s going to need some support."

On his expectations of their £45million summer signing,

Gabriel Jesus

, Arteta added:

"When you bring top players, they're coming from top clubs and they've been extremely successful over the years, they're going to expect that [high].

"The role Gabby has here is going to be very different to the role he had in his previous club, and need some time and adaptation.
