Man City’s Cancelo gets No.7 from Sterling

The number which was mostly given to wingers at Manchester City has been granted to the full-back for the next season.

Joao Cancelo

has gotten the No.7 shirt at

Manchester City

before the start of the next season, replacing Raheem Sterling after he moved out the exit door to Chelsea.

The full-back was given a starting shirt number at City by the manager, having worn No.27 before since he joined the club from Juventus in 2019.

Gifting the number to a defensive figure after it was mostly associated with forward players was a surprising decision this season for the Premier League champions.

Cancelo will wear the number but it will not be his first time at club level, as he had it at

Inter

before.

Aside from Sterling, the other players he follows who formerly held the number are Georgi Kinkladze, Stephen Ireland, David White, Peter Barnes, Mike Summerbee and Robbie Fowler.

Erling Haaland has received No.9 shirt, while Kalvin Phillips has gotten the No.4. No.19 has been given to Julian Alvarez and Stefan Ortega will get No.18.
