Mancini will remain Italy's boss, keen on winning the World Cup

The Italy head coach has recommended that he will remain in charge for another four years as he is eager to win the World Cup.

Roberto Mancini

has admitted that he wanted to step down as Italy manager twice, but he is now keen on winning the World Cup with his side.

The head coach has helped Italy win the Euro 2020a year ago but they did not make it to Qatar 2022 after their shocking loss at the hands of North Macedonia.

It is the second time that the four-time World Cup winners have missed out on the competition, with the last time being Russia 2018.

Notwithstanding their disappointing campaign, Italian Football Federation president Gabriele Gravina confirmed in March that the 57-year-old will stay.

However, Mancini has revealed that he wanted to quit after their defeat at the hands of North Macedonia, as well as eight months before that when they vanquished England in the final of Euro 2020.

"It was more [likely] the second time,"

the former Manchester City and Inter boss told

Gazzetta dello Sport

.

"I found myself in a really difficult situation.

"I thought about it a bit after Wembley but there was a World Cup a little more than a year later."

Italy will have another chance in 2026 when Canada, Mexico and the USA will host the World Cup, expanding to 48 sides rather than 32.

"From when I became manager, I had an objective: win the Euros and a World Cup,"

he said.

"A year ago, with the cup in my hands, I told myself: 'I'm going after the other'.

"I was thinking about this World Cup [in Qatar] – obviously that isn't the case. But I continue to think we will win one, yes."
