Breaking: Sampaoli and Marseille Part Ways by Mutual Consent

The Argentine replaced Andre Villas-Boas in February 2021, and despite leading the club to a second-place finish last season the club decided to part way with the Argentine tactician.

Confirmed by Marseille’s official statement, the Ligue 1 club and

Jorge Sampaoli

reached an agreement to part ways, making the Argentine departing Stade Velodrome just under a year and a half after his arrival.

Leading Marseille to a second-place finish behind champions Paris Saint-Germain in his only full season in charge and earning Champions League qualification, the former Argentina national team boss reportedly got frustrated with a lack of transfer activity and ambition from the club. Sampaoli leaves with 36 wins from 67 games in charge, and with a season still to run on his contract.

"

[We] would like to sincerely and warmly thank the work of Jorge Sampaoli,"

read an official

Marseille

statement

.

"We are satisfied with the progress made and the emotions experienced together, but following a long reflection, the two parties [...] have agreed to put an end to this stage [of their careers].

Sampaoli won three league championships and the Copa Sudamericana trophy as the head coach of Universidad de Chile. As a result of his achievements, he was appointed as the new coach of the Chilean men's national team in 2012, succeeding Claudio Borghi.

After beating Argentina in the 2015 Copa América final in Chile, he guided the Chilean national football team to their first Copa América victory.
