Milan confirm: Ibrahimovic to miss rest of 2022 due to knee surgery
After undergoing knee surgery, Zlatan Ibrahimovic may have played his final match for Milan – and his professional career.
has announced that Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be out for the rest of 2022 due to a knee operation, fueling rumors that the attacker may hang up his boots.
On Sunday, Ibrahimovic toasted Milan's
Serie Atitle triumph with a cigar as he made his way out onto the field for the trophy handover.
However, the 40-year-old, who came off as a substitute in Milan's 3-0 title-clinching triumph against
Sassuolo, may have made his final outing for the club, if not his whole career, after undergoing surgery on his left knee.
The Serie A club announced on Wednesday that Ibrahimovic will be sidelined for seven to eight months, but that the operation went well.
"AC Milan announces that Zlatan Ibrahimovic underwent surgery on his left knee today by Dr. Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet, in the presence of club medical director Stefano Mazzoni, at the Hospital Jean Mermoz in Lyon," read a Milan statement.
"The arthroscopy had been planned for some time to definitively resolve the instability of the joint through reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament, with lateral reinforcement and meniscal repair. The operation was perfectly successful and the prognosis is estimated at seven-to-eight months."
Ibrahimovic has eight goals in 23 Serie A games this season, despite making his last appearance in January. His contract will expire in June.
According to reports in Italy earlier this week, Milan would only give Ibrahimovic a new contract if surgery was not required, and Ibrahimovic would contemplate retiring if surgery was required.
