"We talked to Allegri before hiring Inzaghi" - Inter director Marotta

Beppe Marotta, the director of Inter, said that the club talked to Massimiliano Allegri before hiring Simone Inzaghi as coach in the summer.

Inter

were looking for someone to replace

Antonio Conte

, who quit shortly after the end of the season in which the club won its first league title in 11 years.

Allegri, who was a free agent, was talked about a lot for the job when rumors started to spread that Conte might leave and Inzaghi was still the coach of

Lazio

. "We were in touch with Allegri before we got

Simone Inzaghi

," Marotta told

DAZN

. "We didn't think Simone would be free, but Max and I both had interesting profiles, so we talked.

"We called him [Inzaghi] without knowing he was at dinner [with Lazio president Claudio Lotito], and Simone was obviously a little embarrassed. "I have to say that Piero Ausilio and I got him to agree quickly, but with respect for Lotito, because of how well we timed things and how well we guessed what he would do.

"When a coach or player stays at a club for too long, like Inzaghi did at Lazio, it is time for them to try something new, which gives them a chance to grow." Inzaghi had been the coach of Lazio since 2016. During his time there, the team won two Supercoppa titles and the Coppa Italia in 2019.

Allegri had already been in charge of

Milan

from 2010 to 2014, and he had been free since he left Juve in 2019. He returned to the club for a second time at the start of the new season. Allegri worked for Juve, and Marotta brought him to Turin in 2014.
