Bayern Munich 1-1 Villarreal: Late Chukwueze strike stunned Bavarians

Villarreal stunned Bayern Munich to reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in 16 years.

Substitute Samuel Chukwueze's late goal earned Unai Emery's side a 1-1 draw against

Bayern Munich

on the night and a 2-1 victory on aggregate in the quarter-final tie of the

Champions League

.

Julian Nagelsmann set up his team to attack with Leroy Sane and Kingsley Coman at wing-back and Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller, and Jamal Musiala forming a forward trident.

Villarreal

like the first leg defended deep and left no space for Bayern to create dangerous opportunities. Nagelsmann's side who are Champions League's top goal scorers this campaign were reduced to one shot on target in the first half.

Bayern started the second half with a better tempo and Robert Lewandowski's smart finish six minutes after the restart got the game back level on aggregate.

After Lewandowski's goal, Bayern again looked blunt in front of the goal and struggled to create meaningful openings. Thomas Muller wasted their best chance to win the tie as he nodded wide when completely unmarked in the 71th minute.

The game looked set to head for extra-time but Chukwueze, who only entered the pitch in the 84th minute, got on the end of Gerard Moreno's cross to find the net in the 88th minute.

Emery’s side will face the winner of Liverpool versus Benfica in the semi final, a contest Jurgen Klopp's side currently leads 3-1 on aggregate.
