Evra: Lukaku made a mistake joining Chelsea

Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra believes Romelu Lukaku made the wrong decision to return to Chelsea last summer.

Lukaku

after a stellar season in Serie A with

Inter

moved back to Stamford Bridge last summer in a deal worth around £100 million. However, the deal hasn’t paid off and Lukaku has just five Premier League goals so far this season.

“Those who criticize Lukaku have a short memory because when he first arrived in London, he scored goals and did very well,”

Patrice Evra told Voetbalprimeur.

“After he got injured and then said that he missed Inter, that created a bit of a mess with the fans.”

Lukaku joined Chelsea in 2011 from Anderlecht but left them for Everton in 2014. He moved to Manchester United in 2017 and then joined Inter in 2020 before returning to Chelsea.

“He wanted at all costs to return to

Chelsea

, but he should’ve stayed at Inter after a season at such a high level,”

added former Juventus defender Evra.

“He made that choice and it was a big mistake, in my view.”

In the 2020-21 season, the 28 year old Lukaku had found the net 30 times in 44 official matches and helped Inter end Juventus’ title dominance.
