Der Spiegel alleges three-year Manchester City investigation
According to Der Spiegel, the target of a three-year investigation into possible Financial Fair Play violations by the English champions has been revealed.
Der Spiegel, a German newspaper, has claimed to know the contents of a Premier League investigation against
Manchester City. The Premier League launched an investigation against City in March 2019 for potential
Financial Fair Play
(FFP) violations, which is still ongoing.
The English champions were initially disqualified from European competition for two years after UEFA investigated them. Still, the judgment was overturned by the
Court of Arbitration for Sport
(CAS), which stated that "most of the claimed breaches were either not substantiated or time-barred."
The Premier League's investigation, according to
Der Spiegel
, is looking into three areas, the first of which is that "underage youngsters were reportedly encouraged to sign contracts with Manchester City by monetary rewards, in breach of the regulations."
Second, "club sponsors in Abu Dhabi are accused of providing only a percentage of their funds to the club itself, with the majority appearing to come from [owner] Sheikh Mansour himself," according to the report.
Finally, former manager
Roberto Mancini"is believed to have earned a major chunk of his remuneration secretly via a phony consultant contract," according to the report. In 2018, several assertions made by Der Spiegel, based on data allegedly obtained by whistleblowers Football Leaks, spurred a UEFA inquiry into possible FFP infractions.
After being first sanctioned by UEFA, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled that City did not misrepresent sponsorship contributions as had been claimed. GOAL has reached out to City for comment on Der Spiegel's recent allegations but has yet to get a response.
