UEFA president Ceferin calls for a “meeting” amid Ukraine crisis

Aleksander Ceferin, the UEFA president, has asked everyone to be ready for an “extraordinary meeting” for Friday to see if Russia should be taken off the final of the Champions League because of the crisis happening in Ukraine.

Ukraine revealed that Russia launched a “full-scale invasion” with explosions in big cities like Kyiv and Kharkiv.

The final of the

Champions League

on May 18 is going to be played at

Zenit St Petersburg

’s Gasprom Arena.

UEFA’s governing body stated on Thursday:

"Following the evolution of the situation between Russia and Ukraine in the last 24 hours, the UEFA President has decided to call an extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee for Friday 25 February at 10:00 CET, in order to evaluate the situation and take all necessary decisions."

The Premier League of Ukraine has been postponed after the attack on Ukraine from Russia.

During a short statement, the league revealed that the suspension was because of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s decision to have martial law but there was no planned date to continue.

"

Due to the imposition of martial law in Ukraine, the championship of Ukraine has been suspended,"

a UPL statement read.

The Ukrainian national team’s plans were also affected as they are set to face Scotland in Glasgow in the qualifying play-offs of the World Cup on March 24.

Shakhtar Donetsk

’s Italian boss

is stuck in Kiev hotel with eight staff members, his Brazilian players and their families, according to Sky in Italy.

All of them are doing their best to get a safe return to home. The Ukrainian top flight was going to continue on Friday after winter break. Shakhtar are sitting top of the table, with two points in their advantage from Dinamo Kiev.
