Arsenal set a red card record in the Premier League
The Gunners defender did a second bookable offence and was, therefore, sent off to compound a bad start to the second half of the Premier League for his side.
After
Gabriel
was given a red card and sent off the field in
Arsenal’s 2-1 loss at the hands of
Manchester City, the Gunners set a new record for red cards.
Mikel Arteta
’s side hosted
Premier Leagueleader City on New Year’s Day looking to bounce back from their 5-0 loss in August.
Bukayo Saka
found the target to give his side the lead only for
Riyad Mahrez
to level the game before defender Gabriel was sent off, which made Arsenal the team that has 100 red cards since the Premier League was formed in 1992.
Meanwhile, Gabriel is the 11th player under Mikel Arteta’s reign to have been given a red card.
The Gunners tried to keep up and deal with the pressure of playing with 10 men, but
Rodri
met the back of the net and sealed City’s victory, moving them further clear at the top of the table.
Although Arteta’s side showed off an improved performance against Guardiola’s, they have now been defeated in all their last ten games. Arsenal are sitting fourth on the table, four points above West Ham, who are trying hard to reach the top four.
