De Laurentis prefers Insigne over Jorginho to take Italy's penalties

The Chelsea star missed a crucial penalty in Italy’s draw against Switzerland.

Italy were held to a 1-1 draw in their World Cup qualifying match against Switzerland on Friday. The Azzurri had the chance to win the game by a last-minute penalty, but Jorginho failed to convert the spot-kick.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis believes Lorenzo Insigne should replace the Ballon d’Or nominee as Italy’s first choice to take penalties.

“I’m sorry that they always ask those who are not penalty takers,”

he said.

“If Insigne had stayed on the pitch, would he have taken it? Maybe it would have been better.”

Since missing a penalty in the Euro 2020 final against England, Jorginho has missed two more spot-kicks during the World Cup qualifiers.

Italy sit on top of Group C of the qualifiers on goal difference. The Azzurri will face Northern Ireland in their next World Cup qualifier on Monday.
