Wijnaldum claims he was given no signals to stay at Anfield

The Dutch midfielder joined PSG as a free agent after failing to renew his contract with Liverpool.

Having joined Liverpool on a £23 million deal in the summer of 2016,

Georginio Wijnaldum

became a key figure in the Reds’ midfield under Jurgen Klopp.

The Dutchman, who helped the Merseyside club in their recent Champions League and Premier League triumphs, was not able to renew his contract at Anfield beyond the 2020-21 campaign. Wijnaldum was signed by PSG as a free agent in June, which adds him to a host of top-class players at Parc des Princes.

“You follow your feeling,"

the 30-year-old told

L'Equipe

when asked about his departure from Liverpool.

"Several months ago, I had expressed the desire to stay in Liverpool but, without going into details, Liverpool did not give me the feeling of wanting to keep me.

"In these cases, we have to move forward."

Wijnaldum was initially linked with a move to Barcelona at the start of the summer transfer window. However, the Catalan side decided against signing the Netherlands international due to their unstable financial situation.

"Barcelona came. I was really happy because, since I was a child, as for the majority of Dutch players, it was the club of my dreams even if I must admit that my idol was Zinedine Zidane.

“I had a good idea to commit to Barca. But the negotiations lasted a very long time and Paris came in. Unlike six years earlier, the club showed me their desire to recruit me. It was time for me to have something else.”

Wijnaldum has already made five appearances for the Parisians this season. The French giants are set to start their new Champions League adventure with a match against

Club Brugge

on Wednesday.
