Thiago: I played with pain throughout the last season

The Reds midfielder reveals his fitness issues while explaining the reasons behind his lack of minutes at the Euros.

Thiago Alcantara

joined Liverpool from Bayern Munich in September 2020. Despite having a few impressive performances, the Spaniard failed to reach his best form at Anfield. Thiago was part of Spain’s squad for Euro 2020, but he was mainly used as a backup option throughout the tournament.

As Liverpool are preparing themselves for their upcoming Premier League campaign, Thiago reveals he has dealt with injury problems since last season.

“The last season I started with – from a long time before that – some pain up there in the hamstring, between the glutes, old pain,”

he told the club's

official website

.

“I was never clean to play because I was always with that pain and there’s a point during the end of the last season that I started to feel [it] more and more. And with the national team, even I couldn’t sprint in some terms, I couldn’t do some actions.”

Thiago featured in 24 games for Liverpool as they finished third in Premier League last season. He also appeared in four Euro 2020 matches for La Roja, without ever being included in his side’s starting XI.

Asked about Liverpool’s goals for the upcoming season, the former Bayern midfielder responded:

“The minimum we have to give is how we ended with these wins, with these extraordinary moments. But at the end, it was just about pushing because of the situation that we had.

“We weren’t happy enough, so we were pushing to be as happy as we could. But now we start from zero and we want everything, we want to win everything again.”

Liverpool will play against

Athletic Bilbao

in a pre-season friendly on Sunday. The Reds must face Norwich City in the opening match of their 2020-21 campaign on August 14.
