Wijnaldum will walk off the pitch if he faces abuse for his armband

The Netherlands captain insists on wearing rainbow armband and threatens that he will leave the game if he faces abuse for that.

Netherland

will face the

Czech Republic

in Budapest, and their captain

Georginio Wijnaldum

has claimed that he is going to wear a rainbow-colored armband and has insisted that he and his teammates will leave the pitch if they face any abuse for wearing that armband.

All these conversations have been started when Hungary passed a law against sharing content promoting homosexuality in schools.

UEFA has been trying to stop the fights about the matter, standing against Germany’s decision to color the Allianz Arena in rainbow colors, but these conversations have not disappointed Wijnaldum about his support for the LGBT community.

"It is not just against Hungary,"

he said.

"The armband means a lot because we stand for diversity – one love means everybody is a part of it and everybody should be free to be who they are.

"In our opinion [the right to be yourself] has been encroached upon. As players we have a podium to do whatever we can to help."

There have been some homophobic reactions against players wearing a rainbow-colored armband in Budapest, and Wijnaldum has claimed that he and his teammates will leave the pitch if such things happen in their clash against the Czech Republic.

"UEFA should be there to protect the players and make the decision,"

he said

. "It should not be left to the players. Players often get punished for protecting themselves so UEFA needs to take a lead role in this.

"I have said I don’t really know how I will react in such a situation. I thought first that I would walk off the pitch but maybe not now because maybe the opponent will think: ‘Let them [in the crowd] throw racist slurs and they will walk off the pitch'.

"It could be the case that I will walk off the pitch but I will speak with the players about it first."
