Daei congratulates Ronaldo for equalling international goals record
Iran legend Ali Daei has sent a message of congratulations to Cristiano Ronaldo after equalling his long-standing record for most international goals in men’s football.
The 36-year-old striker scored twice from the spot during
Portugal’s 2-2 draw against Franceand helped his side reach the knockout stages of Euro 2020 as one of the four best third-placed teams.
He also took his international goals tally to 109, equalling the record set by former Iran forward
Ali Daei
between 1993 and 2006.
Daei
took to his Instagram account to congratulate the Portuguese skipper for becoming the joint-top scoring men’s international of all time and expressed his happiness that this record will belong to the great champion of football.
“Congratulations to Cristiano Ronaldo, who is now one goal away from breaking the men’s international goal scoring record,”
wrote Daei on
Instagram.
“I am honored that this remarkable achievement will belong to Ronaldo – great champion of football and caring humanist who inspires and impacts lives throughout the world.
“Vamos!”
It took 178 caps for the Portuguese striker to reach the 109 figure, compared to Daei’s 145 appearances for Iran.
He also set a new record this evening, becoming the first man to score at least 20 goals between the World Cup and European Championships.
He will be in line to break Daei’s record when
Portugal
face
Belgium
in the Euro 2020 Round of 16.
