Low urges Germany to 'take more risks' against Portugal

The Mannschaft boss admits his side have not played their best against France and says they must create more chances in their upcoming battle against Fernando Santos’s side.

Germany

will play their second Group F match against

Portugal

on Tuesday. Having been beaten by France in their opening Euro 2020 match,

Joachim Low

’s side must avoid a defeat against

Cristiano Ronaldo

and co to keep their European Championship dreams alive. In a pre-match interview, Low joked about Ronaldo’s recent controversy of removing two Coca-Cola bottles at a press conference.

"Cristiano can do more than put away Coca-Cola bottles, he has more qualities,"

Low told reporters on Friday.

Asked about his side’s performance against France, the German manager responded:

"I think every player understood in attack we need to react in a different way. If we are in the final third, we need to stay there. [Against France] we always played backwards going out of the final third,

"We tried to be secure, not intense enough, but we need this dynamic in attack, especially in the final third.

"We need to take more risks, occupy spaces better, not go out of these spaces, and be more effective. We missed a number of occasions and options to do better [in the France game] and I'm sure we will do better tomorrow."

Portugal opened their Euro 2020 tournament with a 3-0 victory against

Hungary

last week. Ronaldo scored twice for Fernando Santos’ side as the reigning champions started the tournament with confidence.

Asked about the central role of Ronaldo in Portugal’s final third, Low responded:

"It's not a one-man show, that's clear,

"Portugal have been at the top since four to five years. With winning the Euro title [in 2016] they grew together, they're a great team.

"Is it a one-man show? It was before... Cristiano Ronaldo the superstar of the Portuguese team, he was 'the man', but this has changed. They have more players of top quality: [Bernardo] Silva, [Bruno] Fernandes, Joao Felix, Jota and many more and they are involved in attack as much as Cristiano is."

Germany have won their last four matches against Portugal in major tournaments, but Low says that won’t help his side in their upcoming battle.

"All that's important is tomorrow night, 90 minutes against Portugal, and not what our history is against Portugal or France. This doesn't help if you know about that."

After their match against Portugal, Germany will prepare themselves to face Hungary in their last ‘Group of Death’ match on Wednesday.
