Be more selfish in chances of goals - Ex-Germany boss to Werner

how he could silence his critics at Euro 2020, insisting that the misfiring striker needs to be “more selfish” in the final third.

Joachim Low has called up the Chelsea forward to be part of his 26-man squad for the European Championships, notwithstanding a disappointing first season with the Blues in the Premier League.

The Germany international won the Champions League trophy with Chelsea but was criticized on his finishing ability regularly, and Vogts believes the 25-year-old should be more single-minded when facing dangerous positions.

When asked to give Werner some advice before Germany’s clash against France on Tuesday, the ex-Germany boss told

"Many accuse him of not scoring enough, and he must certainly work on that.

"As a striker, you shouldn't think about using the man next to you first, scoring a goal has to be your first goal, always. Because a striker is measured by goals, it's heroic when you score the decisive goal. So, Timo Werner: be more selfish!"

The 74-year-old thinks Werner should be in the starting XI when they take on France.

Vogts added. 

"He can get into the important spaces in front of the goal with his speed, right there, in the centre, the French are vulnerable. He can do a lot with his strength one-on-one."

He joined the Blues last summer from RB Leipzig with a transfer fee of £47.5 million ($67m) and made 52 appearances during his first campaign.

Werner has been able to get himself a regular place with his prolific performance, contributing 15 assists, meeting the target only 12 times himself, with six being scored in the Premier League.

The German has represented his country on 39 occasions since 2017, finding the target 16 times. His most recent effort was when Die Mannschaft thrashed Latvia 7-1 in the Euro warm-up clash last Monday.
