Venezia return to Serie A after 19 years

Venezia finally were able to get into the Serie A after 19 years as they claimed a 2-1 aggregate victory against Cittadella.

Venezia

were last in

Serie A

in 2001/02 and since then they have been trying to get back to the top flight, according to

Venezia's 1-0 win in their first leg against Cittadella was their last hope to get back to Serie A after 19 years. However, Federico Proia was able to score in the 26th minute on Thursday to put Cittadella ahead and make it harder for Venezia to achieve their goal.

Cittadella then piled on the pressure, with the visitors mustering 16 attempts in total, with five – including their goal – on target.

However, Venezia’s hard work finally paid off as Riccardo Bocalon's last-gasp goal in the 93rd minute secured their long-awaited return to the top flight.

Venezia finished fifth in

Serie B

and in the quarterfinals of the playoff due to promotion they eliminated Chievo in extra time to a single game (3-2) and in the semifinals, they beat Lecce in a double game (1- 0 in the first leg and 1-1 in the return).

Therefore they are going to join Empoli and Salernitana, who had already achieved promotion without having to play the playoff by finishing first and second respectively in the standings, to get into the top tier for the 2021/22 season.
