De Laurentiis confirms Gattuso’s departure from Napoli

The Italian coach will leave the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona after two years.

Napoli

failed to secure a Champions League spot for the next season as they were held to a 1-1 draw in their match against

Hellas Verona

on Sunday.

Amir Rrahmani

scored the opening goal for

Gennaro Gattuso

’s team just before the hour mark, but Verona got their equalizer with

Davide Faraoni

’s strike nine minutes later. A victory would have been enough for Napoli to secure their top-four finish. However, Napoli stood fifth in Serie A’s final standings as they were leapfrogged by

Juventus

on the league’s final day. Napoli’s owner

Aurelio De Laurentiis

announced Gattuso’s departure from the club on Sunday night.

“Dear Rino, I am happy to have spent almost two seasons with you,"

De Laurentiis wrote on

Twitter

.

"Thank you for your work and I wish you success wherever you go. A hug also to your wife and children."

Napoli's

official account

posted an image of Gattuso with the caption:

"Thank you, boss!"

Gattuso replaced

Carlo Ancelotti

as Napoli’s coach in December 2020. The former

AC Milan

player delivered the club’s first piece of silverware in six seasons when he won the Coppa Italia seven months later. Gattuso’s team finished the 2019-20 campaign in seventh place on the league table. Despite collecting 15 more points this season, the Italian coach was sacked due to his failure in securing a top-four finish.
