Alaves appoint Javi Calleja as Abelardo Fernandez’s successor

Alaves have appointed Spanish tactician Javi Calleja as their manager after firing Abelardo Fernandez.

The

La Liga

club decided to dismiss former

Barcelona

defender

Abelardo Fernandez

following a poor run of form which saw them sit at the bottom of the table.

During Fernandez’s reign, Alaves have only earned five points in 13 games since the new year and a significant turnaround is required to save them from relegation.

Javi Calleja

put pen to paper for a short-term contract that keeps him until the end of the campaign and there is an option to extend the deal in the summer, according to reports from

Marca

.

Since leaving

Villarreal

after three years in 2020, the Spanish coach did not have a managerial role. Alaves are lacking four points to drag themselves out of the relegation zone ahead of the derby against

Athletic Bilbao

on the weekend.
