Guardiola says Ederson could take the next penalty
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said he will consider allowing Ederson to take his side's next penalty after Ilkay Gundogan's missed spot-kick during the 4-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
The referee showed the spot in the first half after
Raheem Sterling
was knocked down by
Fabinho
. But
Ilkay Gundogan
fired his penalty over
Alisson Becker
’s goal and into the stands. However, four goals later those fears disappeared.
Gundogan's miss, however, was still a bit of a concern for
Guardiola
, who has chosen four different penalty takers this season.
Guardiola's side have missed three of the six penalties they have been awarded and the City boss said he would not rule out
Ederson
, who claimed he was the best penalty taker in the team, to strike the next one.
"A lot of emotions, many things happening in the game,"
Guardiola told BBC.
"Gundogan missed a penalty, it's like a routine against them, but we started really really well, doing what we want to do. In the second half, the way we react to the goal, the way we played with quality made the difference.
He added:
"It's a problem that we have. In important moments, we cannot miss it, and it doesn't matter the taker. Again, I'm going to think about Ederson, he might be the taker next time."
With Sunday’s win over
Liverpool,
Manchester Cityextended their lead at the top of the table and moved five points clear of
Manchester United.
