Southgate said about Gomez’s injury: “nobody was around him”

Joe Gomez's severe knee injury is still questionable. England leader Gareth Southgate seems worried by the non-contact problem. Actually, there was no one around the player at the time of the injury.

Gomez undergoes further treatment by Liverpool's medical team. Also, the Premier League champions have other players suffering from injuries including Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Gareth Southgate said: "What was upsetting was to see he was in a fair bit of pain. There was nobody around him when the injury happened and I didn't like that element of it.”

Ensuing the news of the problem during training, the Football Association (FA) and Liverpool each declared Gomez’s withdrawal from the England side for the friendly with the Republic of Ireland and the Nations League battle against Belgium and Iceland.

Southgate said about Gomez's injury to press interview: "I can't tell you how serious it is because he’s yet to have scans.”

"We've got to wait and see what the scans show. We're all hopeful for him that it's not what it looks like it might be."

During the turbulent week for the FA, chairman Greg Clarke has also resigned from his post.

After being heavily criticized for the usage of the term "coloured footballers,” Clarke left his official position.

Southgate replied  on Clarke's leaving : "The terminology he used in a number of areas was not acceptable.

"It doesn't reflect the view of the FA and doesn't reflect what we as a team stand for. I don't think he had any alternative but to take the decision he did and resign."

He added: "We had spoken positively about [diversity] the day before, so I felt it was necessary to explain that what happened yesterday wasn't acceptable and didn't represent what we stand for as a team.
