‘Why have we bought him?’ Evra and Neville in doubt about Van de Beek

Manchester United’s new signing has barely given game time and two former players question his transfer to the club.

Donny Van de Beek

did not feature in

Manchester United

’s Saturday game against

Chelsea

and is yet to make his first start for the Red Devils in the Premier league. The Dutch midfielder joined Manchester United with a £40 million transfer from

Ajax

in the summer transfer window but despite his appearance in 7 games for the English side he has only played 59 minutes in the Premier League and 2 minutes in the Champions League for his new club. Solskjaer has preferred to give more game time to players like Fred and

Paul Pogba

in the team’s recent games. The lack of game time for the Dutchman was the reason for two former Manchester United Players Garry Neville and Patrice Evra to question the 23-year-old’s transfer to Manchester and his role at the squad.

"We’re talking about Van de Beek, nothing against the kid, but why have we bought him? He’s watching the game from the stand every game," Evra said to

Sky Sports

. "We don’t need him, that’s the truth."

In addition to Evra, Garry Neville also criticized the expensive move for Van de Beek and warned that if he won’t feature in more games for the club he will be disappointed.

"What is a little bit of a mystery is the use of Van de Beek since he’s been signed for £40 million," Neville said.

"He doesn’t seem to be at the forefront of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans in every game. It’s a bit of a mystery that one. And the more he doesn’t start, and the more he doesn’t come on, the more you’re thinking, 'Well £40m player, ordinarily you’d get him in the team'.

"He must be thinking: 'What am I doing here?' at this moment in time."

While the club has been questioned about the transfer of Van de Beek, Solskjaer has insisted that the player will get his game time and there is no worry about his place in the squad
