Imagine you are

Italy's national football

team in the 1990s and you are about to participate in a big tournament. You have to select a limited number of stars for the squad. The hardest choice is the goalkeeper. You have old, experienced Walter Zenga, Gianluca Pagliuca on his peak, young and refreshing Francesco Toldo and

Gianluigi Buffon

, but all of them are unavailable for the sake of argument. Despite you can't use any of these epic goalkeepers, you don't have to worry at all. Because you have Angelo Peruzzi.

Peruzzi played for

Roma

,

Inter Milan

, and

Hellas Verona

, but he spent the majority of his career in

Lazio

and

Juventus

. He was Juventus' keeper when they won their last Champions League in 1996. He was also the goalkeeper of Lazio during Sven-Goran Eriksson's memorable era. Peruzzi has 31 national team caps. He was the starting goalkeeper of the Azzurri in UEFA Euro 1996.

The following are some lesser-known facts about Angelo Peruzzi:

Nicknamed “Tyson” and more amicably “The Wild Boar”, Angelo Peruzzi only played for Italian Clubs.

Angelo Peruzzi Early Life

The first fact about Angelo Peruzzi that you need to know is, for sure, his birth. Angelo was born on February 16, 1970, in Blera, a small town near Viterbo. The town is placed in the north of Lazio and its capital, Rome. Between studying accountancy and agriculture, he abandoned both to be a footballer. Peruzzi's childhood club was Roma.

Angelo Peruzzi Personal Life

A fact about Angelo Peruzzi is that, on June 95, he married Alessandra Scialacqua when he was 25 years old. Two years later, their first child was born. Alessia Peruzzi is Angelo’s only daughter and was born in May 1997 in Turin, so she has 24 years of age now. Angelo and Alessandra had another child in 2002. Their first son is Mattia, who has decided to be a goalkeeper like his father. With eighteen years of age, he has been in Lazio U17 and U19 squad and played in two games in the Primavera 1 league until now.

Angelo Peruzzi Club Career

Peruzzi was 18 years old when he joined the senior team of Roma in 1987-88. Let’s find out more about this young star.

AS Roma

Peruzzi made his debut in Serie A as the goalkeeper of Roma. On December 13, 1987, in the match against

Milan

, Peruzzi played one half. He kept a clean sheet that day and Roma won, 2-0. In the next season, as the reserve goalkeeper, he was mainly used in Coppa Italia fixtures. He capped 12 times in Serie A. The other achievement of Peruzzi, in 1988-89 was his European debut. He played in the UEFA Cup match against

FC Nurnberg

.

In order to have more playtime, Peruzzi was loaned to Hellas Verona. He was the main goalkeeper there and had 29

Serie A

appearances. After the return from the loan, Peruzzi's skills were developing and he seemed very promising, but he was accused of taking illegal substances and was banned for one year. Andrea Carnevale was another Roman player who was banned for the same reason. After that, he needed something big to revive. The big thing was, of course, Juventus.

Juventus

After missing one season, Peruzzi signed with Juventus as the substitute for Stefano Tacconi. In 1991-92, Peruzzi was Coppa Italia's keeper for Juventus, plus a few league caps, but soon he showed his true color. In 1992-93, he overtook Stefano Tacconi as the first goalkeeper. Juventus manager Giovanni Trapattoni was a big help for Peruzzi. Trapattoni was the coach when he transferred to Juventus after the doping issue. Trapattoni's trust in Peruzzi paid off and he was on his top performance. 1992-93 was the season that Juventus signed Gianluca Vialli, who overtook legendary Roberto Baggio.

After years of being behind Milan and Inter, 1994-95 was the spring for the Old Lady of Turin. Marcelo Lippi replaced Trapattoni in Juventus. Lippi's first season was phenomenal. Juventus won Serie A after nine years. Peruzzi won his first title, but there was more. Juventus completed the domestic double by winning the Coppa Italia, too. Peruzzi's substitute was the goalkeeper in the

Coppa Italia

, but Peruzzi received the medal, too.

The final match was against

Parma

, and Juventus won both legs, but in a more important final, Parma beat them. It was an Italian UEFA Cup final and Rampulla was in the goal instead of Peruzzi. Parma won by an early goal by Dino Baggio and the third trophy slipped out of Old Lady's hands. In 1999, Marcelo Lippi left Juventus to join their arch-rival Inter. Lippi took Peruzzi with himself to Inter to replace Gianluca Pagliuca.

Inter

Lippi broke the world's transfer record for Christian Vieri. Clarence Seedorf, Ivan Cordoba, and Angelo Peruzzi were other big transfers Lippi made in Inter. Angelo Peruzzi cost more than $17 million for Inter. Despite the good form of Peruzzi, Inter didn't have a good season. The 4th position on the Serie A standing table was not what Inter expected from Lippi. They had big players like Ronaldo, Baggio, Recoba, and Zanetti in their squad.

They lost the Coppa Italia final to Lazio. Biancocelesti was the Serie A champion, too. After only one season and 33 caps, Peruzzi was sold by Inter. An Interesting fact is that Lippi didn’t last long either and departed from Inter. Only this time they had different destinations. Peruzzi returned to Rome to join the Italian champion, Lazio.

Lazio

Peruzzi's spell in Inter was one year long and they decided to use their young goalkeeper Sebastien Frey. Inter sold Peruzzi to Lazio for $19.69 million, plus Marco Ballotta. At first, it seems like a good idea: relying on talent and earning money by selling Peruzzi. But at the end of the season, Inter was full of regrets. Especially after the humiliating 6-0 derby Della Madonnina, they found out that a top goalkeeper is necessary. For Peruzzi and Lazio, the season was much better.

In Serie A the champion was Roma. It is the last time a team other than the three Italian superpowers won the league. Fabio Capello's Roma had great players like Cafu, Walter Samuel, Francesco Totti, and Gabriel Batistuta. The second place was for Juventus under Carlo Ancelotti and in the third place it was Lazio. Serie A title defending Lazio failed to repeat the previous season's success. In January, Eriksson was sacked and replaced by Dino Zoff. Before the managerial changes, Lazio won the Supercoppa Italiana in an exciting battle against Inter that ended 4-3. It was Angelo Peruzzi's first title in Lazio.

Marcelo Lippi was Inter's manager at the time. Dino Zoff didn’t solve the problem in Lazio and Alberto Zaccheroni took his place. Zaccheroni's side did better overall but had some issues. One of the issues was the lack of adaptation of big stars like Gaizka, Mendieta, and Stefano Fiore. The other problem was trashed by cross city rivals in Derby della Capitale. Vincenzo Montella and Francesco Totti had a great night. On the contrary, Peruzzi didn’t stand a chance facing Romans that night. Former Lazio player, Roberto Mancini was the next manager. Mancini was Eriksson's assistant as his first post retirement job.

In 2002-03, Lazio finished 4th on the Serie A table. Mancini is a cup specialist, but his Lazio side was stopped in the semi-finals of both Coppa Italia and the UEFA Cup. The 4th place in Serie A meant reaching the Champions League's qualification round. Lazio only lost four games, which was good for Peruzzi and Mancini. The losses were all by being one goal behind. Mancini's cup effect finally worked and Lazio won 2003-04 Coppa Italia.

Peruzzi won his last club career medal. In Champions League and Serie A, they were not good, instead. They lost 10 matches in the league. The Champions League results were worse, they had one victory and eliminated in group stages. Mancini went to Inter and it resulted in Lazio's awful season, finishing in 13th place. The 2005-06 season seemed much better when they finished 6th, but it later reverted to 16th due to the Calciopoli scandal involvement.

The other interesting fact about that season is that the current goalkeeper and captain of Inter,

Samir Handanovic

was Peruzzi's substitute at the time. 2006-07 was the farewell season for Peruzzi. Juventus was relegated to Serie B and in the absence of Gianluigi Buffon, Peruzzi won the goalkeeper of the year award before his retirement.

Angelo Peruzzi International Career

Peruzzi's international career started in 1990. Italy U21 team coach Cesare Maldini called his name for the European Under-21 Championship. Peruzzi's notable teammates in the tournament were Alessandro Costacurta and Paolo Di Canio. In the semi-finals, Yugoslavia, with loads of stars, defeated Peruzzi's side. Arrigo Sacchi was the first coach calling Peruzzi for the senior team.

He was the goalkeeper in the Euro 96 Qualification and the tournament itself. Peruzzi's alternative was Francesco Toldo. Euro 96 was held in England, where Peruzzi was one of the three Italy players appearing in all three group-stage matches. Their group was named "Group of Death". Italy finished in the 3rd place behind

Germany

and in a tie with

Czech Republic.

Despite having better goal difference, Italy was eliminated because head-to-head result was in favor of Czech. In the qualification round of 1998 World Cup, Italy only conceded two goals and they were in only three matches Peruzzi wasn’t on the squad. Peruzzi's clean sheet in the play-off round was vital for Azzurri' qualification. In the 1998 World Cup, Peruzzi lost the spot to Pagliuca due to injury. After that, Peruzzi never recovered his spot as the number one goalkeeper.

Buffon and Toldo were the first and second choices for Italy. Trapattoni decided to take Peruzzi to Euro 2004. In one of the international friendlies, he played one half for Azzurri. The match against Spain was the first time Peruzzi played for Italy since 1999.

In 2005, following Buffon's injury, Peruzzi found the chance to play again. Marcelo Lippi appointed Peruzzi as the second goalkeeper. In 2006 World Cup, he was Buffon's substitute and won the precious world's gold medal. It was the ending of Peruzzi's national career.

Angelo Peruzzi Stats

Angelo Peruzzi started at AS Roma when he was 18 years old. In his first season, he just appeared once on the pitch in Serie A, and in the second season he had 12 appearances in Serie A and seven in Coppa Italia. Then in the 1989-90 season, he went on loan to Hellas Verona and played 30 games. After returning to Roma he didn’t play in many games, either. With five appearances in his last season, he was transferred to Juventus.

In eight years being Juventus goalkeeper, he was involved in 301 games in all the competitions. He was their first goalkeeper after Tacconi in 1993. He conceded 268 goals in 301 games, of which 192 of them were in the 208 games of Serie A.

After that, he went to Milan and joined Inter for a season in 1999 and replaced Gianluca Pagliuca. He played in 38 games, of which 31 of them were in Serie A. Although Inter didn’t have a great season, Peruzzi earned himself the highest Serie A average in the report cards of the Gazzetta dello Sport. In 2000, he joined Lazio, which was his final club before retiring from being a professional footballer. In seven seasons, he played in 226 games, sometimes as a captain, and conceded 242 goals.

At the international level, at first he was in the shadow of Gianluca Pagliuca. In 1998, he was called up for the world championship, but he had an injury. At the end of the world cup and after recovery, he was officially named as the first goalkeeper by the new manager, Dino Zoff. But after a year, again, his place was taken by Gianluigi Buffon and then Francesco Toldo became Buffon’s first reserve. From 1995 to 2000, he played in 26 games for Italy.

He then refused the 2000 called-up. After five years of absence, he agreed to play as the captain in a friendly match against

Spain

in 2004. In 2005, he was a part of Italy’s squad in a friendly match and after that in three world cup qualification games. In total, he played in 31 games for Italy and conceded 17 goals.
